Register Now for the SME Manufacturing Expo on Oct. 1

Sacramento manufacturers are planning the SME Manufacturing Expo 2021 on October 1 in Rancho Cordova to connect companies in the region and build the local supply chain. The event coincides with National Manufacturing Day that celebrates the impact of manufacturing on our communities, economies and quality of life. Companies can sign up now as sponsors and exhibitors, and attendee registration is also open at the Mfg Expo event website.

Since 2012, National Manufacturing Day has been held across the county on the first Friday of October, explained Jeff Briggs, regional director, Advanced Manufacturing North Region, California Community Colleges, hosted at Sierra College. “The goal of the SME Expo and National Manufacturing Day is to raise awareness of modern manufacturing’s impact on local communities, bring companies together to address shared challenges and inspire people to pursue well-paid, in-demand advanced manufacturing careers,” said Briggs. “Sierra College, Los Rios and Yuba community college districts as well as many of the regional high schools offer certificates and degrees in design, mechatronics, engineering, welding, making, maintenance and advanced manufacturing that build students’ skills so they can gain entry into this field.”

As a nonprofit organization, SME has served practitioners, companies, educators, government entities and local communities across the manufacturing spectrum for more than 80 years. Companies involved in everything from design and prototypes to finishing and assembly will benefit from attending, according to Larry Lewis, board chair, SME Sacramento Valley. “Sacramento manufacturers produce construction materials, food, vehicles, industrial fuels, electronics and health products that are used locally and shipped globally,” said Lewis. “There are outstanding career opportunities in this industry in sales, production, research, design, engineering and marketing. Many companies are currently hiring so we are encouraging educators, students and those seeking career opportunities in the industry to attend,” said Lewis.

Kevin McGrew, director of quality management, Siemens Mobility, Inc. and president, Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Alliance, will be the keynote speaker. The all-day event, held at the Rancho Cordova City Hall, will include industry panels, eight breakout sessions and time to network with exhibitors and attendees.

The Sacramento region is home to dozens of suppliers of high quality products, parts and manufacturing services that give local manufacturers a competitive advantage, explained Dean Peckham, executive director, Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Alliance. “The SME Manufacturing Expo is a unique opportunity for business leaders to make connections and identify vendors that can quickly produce and source needed materials,” said Peckham. “With worldwide shortages and supply chain disruptions, local connections are more valuable than ever to Sacramento manufacturers.”
