Shop Talk – Feb. 23 – Using Simulations

At the Shop talk on February 23, 2021 Randy Schuster, Design Hub, American River College, presented on using simulations for remote instruction. He demonstrated tools that enable students to experience milling, land surveying and drone flights. Even when COVID is over, Schuster envisions using the program for pre-training on the simulator before students actually get on mills. Watch the recording below.

Shop Talk – Creative Solutions to Arranging High School Internships

During the November 2020 Shop Talk, Derek Lee with PilotCity described how they’ve been successful in setting up internships for high school students in San Leandro and other Bay Area cities. Students build hands-on projects in the classroom to address real problems faced by businesses and submit prototypes to the companies for consideration. Students are awarded internships to execute the project for the businesses.

October Shop Talk Provided Resources

On October 20, 2020, there were 18 participants on the Shop Talk zoom meeting. They discussed the results of Manufacturing Day and announced the Breakfast with a Manufacturer series that will continue virtual tours throughout the year.

In addition, the Autodesk team described new developments to support educators during the pandemic, the new Edu2Mfg website was shared, information was provided about how educators can access virtual servers and there was a discussion on how education labs are handling partial reopening.

Shop Talk Sept. 8

The North Region Advanced Manufacturing initiative for California Community Colleges sponsors Shop Talk calls for educators. On Sept. 8, 2020 over 15 participants shared how they are engaging students remotely, and some of the technology they are using to offer instruction virtually. In addition, the group discussed how to attract women to manufacturing classes and careers.

In this August 18, 2020 session of Shop Talk, Chris Klein demonstrates Amatrol curriculum.

Also plans were announced for October Manufacturing Month. Industry partners will be offering virtual tours.

Shop Talk enables college and high school instructors in the greater Sacramento and North region to collaborate, share resources and discuss teaching methods, especially remote learning during COVID-19.

Shop Talk Aug. 4 -Online CTE

In the August 4, 2020 Edu2Mfg Shop Talk, college and high school advanced manufacturing instructors discuss their preparations for school starting. With the pandemic, Career Technical Education teachers in the greater Sacramento region have had to be creative in teaching hands-on manufacturing skills remotely. In these Shop Talk calls, participants share information about kits they are assembling for students, simulation programs they are incorporating and cleaning methods if they are allowing small group labs in person.

Shop Talk May 26

Instructors met on May 26 and gained tips on how to manage effectively their class when teaching online. The guest speaker was Denise Bushnell, Sierra College, who teachers business and information technology.
